From Education to Action: eDNA Sampling Practice for Marine Conservation, Buleleng, Bali

By: admin

In February 2025, the research team from Yayasan Biodiversitas Indonesia (BIONESIA) carried out an educational activity and hands-on practice of environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling in the coastal area of Tejakula, North Bali, in collaboration with Bondalem Eco Dive and the Marine Conservation Class of SMA 2 Tejakula. The initiative was pioneered by Mr. Nyoman Sugiartha to foster youth awareness of marine ecosystems in Bondalem Village. In addition, the activity aimed to introduce the latest scientific approaches in marine biodiversity studies to students and the local community through direct field-based learning.

During the activity, participants received introductory material on the basic principles of eDNA, sampling techniques, and the importance of genetic data in supporting marine ecosystem protection. They were then directly involved in the seawater sampling process at several coastal points in Tejakula, following standard scientific procedures such as sterilizing equipment and using membrane filters.

Through this activity, participants not only gained an understanding of the science behind the eDNA method but also became more aware of the importance of maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. This field-based education is expected to cultivate interest and awareness among younger generations about the role of science in marine conservation efforts.

This activity forms part of BIONESIA’s commitment to strengthening local capacity in molecular-based research and conservation, while also bridging science with coastal communities who serve as the front line in protecting marine ecosystems.
